Electrical Panel Upgrades

Panel Upgrades

A licensed electrician can evaluate the amount of electrical service available to you at your home by calculating the electrical load at your house and assessing the contents of the electrical panel in a home. garage or shop . There are three types of electrical services located at a home or condo:

  • 60 Amp Electrical Service. This is an older service standard. If your home or condo has this, you will not be able to charge an electric vehicle unless your electrical service is upgraded.
  • 110 Amp Electrical Service. If you have this electrical service and all electric appliances, including electric AC, you will not be able to charge an electric vehicle.

However, if you have limited electric appliances (gas cooking, gas water heater and no AC), you might be able to have an EV charger installed. The EV charger would not charge at a fast rate but you would be able to charge at slow, molasses like speeds.

  • 220 Amp Electrical Service. So long as your home doesn’t have all electric appliances, and isn’t gi-normous in size and electrical use, you *should* be able to charge your EV.

The electrician can determine whether or not the electrical panel must be upgraded to accommodate charging an electric vehicle with the other electrical demands at the home and provide a cost estimate for an electrical panel upgrade.
